Today in the Lab – Tomorrow in Energy? shines a spotlight on research projects under development in the Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs). Learn more about the initiative, read the launch commentary, or explore the TCPs.
Using a solid material to increase energy thermal storage capacity
What is the aim of the project?
The iAST project aims to develop and demonstrate an energy thermal storage technology in a new way – with what we call a dual media technology.
How could this technology be explained to a high school student?
As an alternative to most storage concepts, this technology consists of using a solid material, such as rocks, to increase storage capacity. Material costs will come down while storage capacity will go up. This will help improve heavy industry’s capacity to use waste heat from production.
What is the value for society?
- improves energy efficiency in industry
- reduces greenhouse gas emissions
- reduces energy costs for heavy industry
- improves the flexibility of the energy system
At what stage of development is this project?
The project is currently being implemented and is expected to end in November 2020. The storage concept has been successfully developed and tested. A demonstrator was constructed and implementation is planned. Further demonstration possibilities are sought.
What government policies could bring this from the lab to the market?
- pricing of waste heat
- higher emissions trading system prices
- R&D funding to broaden this application.

About the ECES TCP
Established in 1978, the Technology Collaboration Programme on Energy Storage (ES TCP) facilitates research, development, implementation and integration of energy storage technologies to optimise the energy efficiency of all kinds of energy systems and enable the increasing use of renewable energy. The ECES TCP enables high-level co-ordination in research, development, dissemination and market deployment of energy storage solutions. Contact: energystoragetcp@gmail.com
