Data and statistics

Energy data and statistics is at the heart of the IEA’s work

Consistent, accurate and timely energy data and statistics are fundamental to developing effective and efficient energy policies. They play a central role in bolstering global energy security, affordability and sustainability.

The IEA is the world’s most authoritative and comprehensive source of energy data, supporting decision makers around the world, including government officials, the private sector, civil society and beyond.

The Agency collects, assesses and disseminates a large portfolio of energy data based on inputs from national administrations. Its data on energy supply and demand serve as the basis for developing annual energy statistics and energy balances for almost every country, while several monthly data collections, such as on oil, gas and electricity, focus on near-term energy security. Other datasets cover energy prices, innovation, access and investment. The IEA also develops key indicators to track energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions from energy, and the gender dimensions of energy issues. It also synthesises information and analysis for projects such as tracking energy technology and policy progress.

The IEA couples its extensive data work with activities to develop data capacities worldwide, both through training events and bilateral work with countries to support their own energy information systems. The Agency also works closely with international partners, including the United Nations, Eurostat and other regional bodies.

Sound data provide a unique platform for informing policies, monitoring energy markets, tracking short-term shifts, identifying long-term trends, and modelling pathways towards secure energy transitions nationally and globally.
