IEA-COP29 Regional Technical Workshop on Methane: Caucasus and Central Asia

Background information

Following the high-level event on methane hosted by the IEA and COP29 Presidency in New York alongside the United Nations General Assembly, this regional workshop will bring together key stakeholders for further technical discussions on strategies and actions to tackle methane emissions from fossil fuels. The workshop, which will be held during Baku Climate Action Week, will focus on challenges and opportunities that are specific to the Caucasus and Central Asia region and work to facilitate greater regional and international collaboration.

The workshop will convene experts from across government, industry and civil society to share their expertise and experiences. This includes energy and environment ministers, climate envoys, representatives from international organisations such as the World Bank and the International Methane Emissions Observatory, and representatives from international and national oil companies, including those that have joined the Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Charter. Key partners including the Clean Air Task Force, Environmental Defense Fund and the Global Methane Hub will also participate.

The workshop will explore our current understanding of methane emissions and abatement opportunities, featuring findings from the IEA’s Global Methane Tracker and the work of the International Methane Emissions Observatory. It will also cover strategies to overcome the financial, policy and regulatory barriers to reducing methane emissions, as outlined in the IEA’s roadmap.
