IEA-SGCC Dialogue Workshop on Global Energy Interconnection: Smart Grids and Beyond
Background
The workshop explored and discussed the resources, technical, economic and policy issues surrounding the Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) concept proposed by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). The event focused in particular on the following aspects:
- (i) The concept, development path, efficiency analysis and outlook of the Global Energy Interconnection;
- (ii) The evaluation, planning and integration of renewable energy;
- (iii) Technology and policy consideration for large-scale deployment of smart grids particularly in distribution networks.
The event was coordinated by the IEA under the International Low-Carbon Energy Technology Platform, in collaboration with the State Grid Corporation of China. The programme drew on relevant IEA analytical work, particularly the How2Guide for Smart Grids in Distribution Networks (May 2015), and The Power of Transformation: Wind, Sun and the Economics of Flexible Power Systems (February 2014). The event also sought to capture smart grid considerations for the future analytical work of the IEA, particularly with respect to the 2016 update of the IEA global Technology Roadmap for Smart Grids.
