New Roles and Responsibilities in Smart Distribution Networks

Background

The IEA is now starting a new programme of work on smart and distributed energy resources. While there is a large debate on the right balance between centralised and distributed resources, it is more and more clear that DER will have a profound impact on the electricity industry. Our goal is to understand what is happening on the ground in different power systems, what innovations are taking place and how policy makers and regulators can respond appropriately to these changes. The workshop will explore the different roles and responsibilities which might enable and remunerate the provision of smart and distributed services using the network.
