Sustainable Biofuels Workshop

Background information

The IEA is convening stakeholders from government, industry, international organisations and civil society for a workshop on the opportunities and challenges of ramping up sustainable biofuels, with a focus on areas that call for greater policy attention.

This workshop revolves around three key topics for biofuels deployment: the challenges of creating regulatory frameworks for carbon accounting, the availability of sustainable feedstock, and new technologies that could expand feedstock supply and boost its diversity.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.

Agenda

9:20-9:30 - Opening remarks

International context on biofuels, including developments at the G20 and G7 working groups.

9:30-11:00 - Session 1: Carbon accounting of biofuels

This session will discuss regulatory frameworks using carbon accounting models, how regulations and removal practices can help improve the carbon intensity of biofuels, and the challenges of setting international rules for sustainable biofuels in aviation or the maritime sector.

11:30-13:00 - Session 2: Feedstock availability and sustainable potential

This session will collect perspectives on the most promising pathways to expand feedstock availability and the policy actions needed to enable that expansion.

14:00-15:45 - Session 3: New technologies

This session will focus on the status of emerging biofuel production pathways, their scale-up potential, expected costs and near-term innovation needs.

16:15-17:00 - Closing remarks
