Workshop on Strengthening National Energy Information Systems for Sub-Saharan African Countries
How to design a national roadmap for energy statistics
The International Energy Agency (IEA) convened national statisticians and policy advisors across energy ministries, national statistics offices, and energy agencies in Sub-Saharan Africa for a regional energy statistics workshop in Ethiopia as a concluding regional activity within the EU-INTPA Energy Sub-Saharan Africa programme, funded by the European Commission.
After the IEA’s successful online and in-person training activities over the previous years, mainly focusing on energy statistics methodologies, this workshop focused on strategically discussing how to strengthen the energy information system at national level, based on the material of the IEA’s upcoming publication “An IEA Guide to designing a national statistics roadmap” and through exchange of experience from stakeholders from across the 10 focus countries (Benin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia) of the EU-INTPA project as well as international partners, such as the African Energy Commission (AFREC).
The workshop created a space to discuss how to setup effective collaboration among institutions, how to identify relevant user needs, how to collect information across the various sectors of the economy, as well as the legal aspects associated with the development of energy information systems. It also allowed a space to more generally discuss reflections on the approaches and lessons learnt from the four-year data and modelling IEA programme for Sub-Saharan African countries.
The workshop was co-organized with the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy and held on 6-8 May in Addis Ababa.
Attendance at this event was by invitation only.
