President of Slovak Republic visits IEA to meet with Executive Director

President Peter Pellegrini of the Slovak Republic visited the headquarters of the International Energy Agency in Paris today for a bilateral meeting with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol on a range of European and international energy issues.

Their discussion focused primarily on themes related to European energy security and economic competitiveness. These included the Slovak Republic’s progress on expanding its nuclear power capacity and the role of nuclear in supporting the security and stability of the European energy system while helping European industries compete internationally. President Pellegrini, who was accompanied by a delegation including Ambassador František Ružička, expressed interest in the IEA’s upcoming report on financing of nuclear power projects, which is due to be published in early 2025.  

The wide range of topics covered in the meeting included car manufacturing in Europe, oil and gas markets, and international trade and geopolitical issues. They also discussed the energy situation in Ukraine and the key challenges it faces for the coming winter, as highlighted in the IEA’s recent report on the matter.

The IEA is due to publish later this month its latest in-depth review of the Slovak Republic’s energy polices.
