The French Low-Carbon National Strategy outlines the new priorities to reach carbon emissions targets and reach carbon neutrality by 2050. It gives short-term carbon budgets, with fixed emissions ceiling which must not be surpassed over five years.

The new version of the strategy came out after Covid-19 surged and amended its targets for 2019-2023 carbon budget (422 Mt CO2/year), and 2024-2028 carbon budget (359 Mt CO2/year). The carbon budget from 2029 to 2033 is 300 Mt CO2/year.

The Strategy could be amended again based on the EU Green Deal, and based on the 'Convention Citoyenne pour le climat' (Citizens Convention on Climate) which will publish its conclusions after the confinement.
