"Update your heating" programme

Last updated: 30 June 2021

The Government of Chile is introducing a special discounted electricity tariff to support 87 000 homes in south-central Chile to switch from firewood combustion for heating to electrical heating. This initiative will help to reduce premature deaths related to PM2.5 and air pollution from wood-fired heating in the region.

The first stage includes the 10 counties that have the highest PM2.5 indicators, allowing them to benefit of lower electricity tariffs to foster upgrading to electric heating systems. This is designed to complement existing programmes that also aim to reduce contamination by firewood, including the Ministry for Environment's initiative to replace heating equipment, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning's programme to support the thermal insulation of homes, and the Ministry of Energy's drier firewood programme to support cleaner combustion of biomass.
