Source: IEA/IRENA Renewables Policies Database
Last updated: 26 October 2021

Cohesion policy is the European Union's main investment policy as well as a strategy to strengthen economic, social and territorial cohesion in the EU member countries. The policy aims to close the gap between countries and regions by concentrating on less developed European countries and regions and supporting the EU’s five policy objectives, focusing on the green and digital transition.

For the 2021-2027 period, the Policy becomes more flexible and simplified with one regulation for eight EU funds (European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), Cohesion Fund, Just Transition Fund (JTF), European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), Asylum and Migration Fund (AMIF), Internal Security Fund (ISF), and Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI)).

Additionally, climate targets such as weighted climate and environmental contribution of investments, minimum targets for funds, and climate adjustment mechanism are newly introduced to reduce disparities in the EU underpinning European solidarity.
