Target to reduce oil and gas sector methane emissions by 75%

Last updated: 15 February 2022

Ahead of COP26 in November 2021, Canada announced that it would join the Global Methane Pledge and that it would commit to develop a methane reduction plan that would reduce oil and gas methane emissions by at least 75% below 2012 levels by 2030.  The announcement referenced the IEA's reports on methane, including the Net Zero by 2050 Roadmap. The announcement further noted that regulations will be part of achieving this goal.

In announcing the target, Canada also reemphasised the goal it announced in 2016 to reduce oil and gas sector methane emissions by 40-45 percent below 2012 levels by 2025.
