Global Gateway

Last updated: 31 October 2022

The Global Gateway is a joint communication from several EU institutions (including the Parliament and the Council) detailing the key principles, focus points, sectors and means of the EU’s global connectivity strategy.

The Global Gateway builds on existing connectivity initiatives (including the EU-Asia Connectivity strategy and the Southern Neighbourhood), which aim to foster infrastructure investments in partner countries and regions, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. The Global Gateway aims to put a specific focus on Africa, Latin America and Central Asia.

The Global Gateway Communication highlights energy as one of the key priorities for infrastructure-related investments. Specifically, the EU aims to develop sustainable and resilient value chains of raw materials, in order to secure an affordable and reliable supply. The Global Gateway Investment Package specifically mentions sustainable minerals raw material value chains as an area of investment, aiming to support partner countries in extracting and adding value locally to their mineral raw materials. By 2030, the European Commission hopes to help enable African countries to integrate their raw materials and resources into sustainable global value chains.

The Global Gateway comprises the Horizon Europe strategic plan.
