Geological Survey Strategic Plan (2020-2030)

The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) is a government research agency under the administration of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. NGU collects, processes and imparts knowledge related to the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the country’s bedrock, mineral resources, deposits and groundwater. 

NGU’s work is divided into five main objectives:

  • Long-term value creation from geological resources.
  • Increase use of geoscience knowledge in spatial planning and development.
  • Enhanced knowledge of the country’s construction and geological processes.
  • Good communication, management and customization of geological knowledge.
  • Increased quality and efficiency through good interaction internally and externally.

The 2020-2030 Strategic Plan outlines four strategic core areas with associated areas of effort to guide the agency's activities over the course of the decade:

  • Core Area 1: Smart Data Capture 
    • Strategic Objective: NGU's data capture is prioritized, efficient, sustainable and scientifically based.
  • Core Area 2: Smart Processing
    • Strategic Objective: NGU's interpretation, analysis and processing of data is uniform, efficient and scientifically based.
  • Core Area 3: Smart Products
    • Strategic Objective: NGU's users benefit optimally from our products, services and expertise.
  • Core Area 4: Smart Organisation
    • Strategic Objective: NGU is a change-competent organization that uses resources effectively for business development and societal benefit, and takes care of health, environmental and safety considerations (HSE) in all activities.
