Decree by which the decentralised public body Lithium for Mexico is created

By this decree, the President of Mexico established Lithium for Mexico (LitioMx), a national lithium company coordinated by the Ministry of Energy that will control all lithium projects within national territory.
The purpose of the company is to undertake the exploration, exploitation, benefit and use of lithium, along with the administration and control of the mineral's economic value chains. It is subject to the Mining Law and regulatory provisions as well as legislation and international treaties regarding environmental protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples. It will also coordinate with the Secretariat for Planning and Energy Transition to achieve the objectives of the Energy Transition Law. The company has the following directives:

  1. Prepare strategic plans and programs for the exploration, exploitation, benefit and use of lithium and its value chains;
  2. Develop and execute engineering projects, research, geological activities related to lithium development;
  3. Research and develop technology required by the industry;
  4. Survey and record geological areas with potential lithium reserves, in coordination with the Mexican Geological Service;
  5. Generate basic geological information of known lithium reserves, in coordination with the Mexican Geological Service;
  6. Promote the sustainable use of lithium for the energy transition and for the general public benefit;
  7. Manage and control the activities necessary for the production, transformation and distribution of lithium-derived products, in coordination with other public and private institutions.
