2026 Electricity Grid Development Plan

Last updated: 11 May 2023

The Spanish government approved a 4-year investment plan meant to upgrade the national electricity grid, cater to an increasing domestic power demand and enable the integration of higher shares of renewable generation (which is expected to increase to 67% of national power generation), especially in underprivileged areas.

The plan aims to upgrade 8,000 km of existing network, build 2,700 km of new transmission lines and establish 700 km of new interconnections under the sea level.

The government foresees that the plan will generate around 80,000 new jobs, and reduce domestic greenhouse gas emissions by 17 million tons by 2026.
