In May 1998, Natural Resources Canada announced the Renewable Energy for Remote Communities programme, which aimed to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in such communities via improved information transfer and technical training as well as targeted project support. The federal government worked in partnership with utilities, the renewable energy industry and northern Canadians, including Aboriginal communities, to develop project implementation tools and to support information transfer of renewable energy technologies to facilitate the selection and implementation of renewable energy projects.
