Law on Biofuel, Biofuels for Transport and Bio-Oils (implementing EC Directive 2003/30/EC)

The Law regulates legal conditions of the production and use of biofuel, biofuels for transport and bio-oils in Lithuania.

Objective of the Law is to:

  • Ensure application of the EU Directive 2003/30/EC on the promotion of the use of biofuels or other renewable fuels for transport, to the legislative framework of Lithuania;
  • Promote the national production of biofuels for transport purposes and to
  • Decrease Lithuania’s dependency on imported fuels;
  • Increase the efficient use of local, renewable and alternative energy resources and the security energy supply;
  • Reduce GHG emissions levels;

Production of biofuel, biofuels for transport and bio-oils from the raw material originating in the Republic of Lithuania will be promoted by tax exemptions.

The Law introduces biofuels blending mandate in Lithuania. Blending mandates established by the Law are as follow:

  • By the end of 2005: 2%
  • By the end of 2010: 5,75%
