Environmental Impact Assessment
Environmental impact assessments are regulated by Law 294/93 and, where relevant, Law 352/1994 on protected areas. The law states that the type of projects/activities that have to go through environmental impact assessment include (but are not limited to):
- Hydro-projects, power plants and transmission lines.
- Agricultural, livestock, forestry and farming operations.
- Any other project that could cause environmental impact.
Originally, the biofuels promotion law exempted biofuel production, but this exemption was later removed by law 3.163 of 2007.
If law is breached, consequences such as warnings, fines and confiscation of property can take place. Any person has the right to formulate a legal complaint. Government officials are obliged to report any breach of the law.
