In 2016 the Government of Nunatsiavut adopted its Energy Security Plan. The Plan is divided into two phase periods. The first phase starts in 2016 and lasts until 2018. The second phase takes place between 2018 and 2024.

The goals of the Plan are following:
• Project the short and medium-term energy demand trends and requirements in Nunatsiavut;
• Document the impacts of diesel power reliance and supply constraints on social conditions, the environment, economic activity and economic development in Nunatsiavut;
• Identify options for energy demand reductions, enhanced productivity of diesel systems and energy distribution systems, peak shaving, improved demand-side energy efficiency, and renewable energy over the short- and medium-terms; and
• Prepare a Nunatsiavut Energy Security Plan through research and discussions between government and partner organizations.
