Community Energy Grant Scheme
The Communities Energy Grant is Ireland’s national retrofit initiative aimed at upgrading building stock and facilities to high standards of energy efficiency and renewable energy usage, thereby reducing fossil fuel usage, energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of this initiative, the Communities Energy Grant supports new approaches to achieving high quality improvements in energy efficiency within Irish communities. By bringing together groups of buildings under the same retrofit programme, communities projects facilitate community-wide energy improvements more efficiently and cost effectively than might otherwise be possible. The Communities Energy Grant is designed to engage all members of SEAI’s Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) network who wish to participate in delivery of energy efficiency works. The scheme is also aimed at those Project Coordinators who have participated in SEAI Community Grant projects.
Nearly 60 communities in every county across Ireland have won grants to fund energy upgrades to nearly 700 homes and 570 community and commercial buildings. The 57 projects awarded funding through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) Communities grant scheme will receive upgrades that will eliminate 34,676 tonnes of CO2 a year, the equivalent of taking more than 11,000 internal combustion engine cars off the road. The government is providing a pot of €25.3m towards €65.8 million total project costs.
