Official Mexican Standard NOM-006-ASEA-2017 Technical criteria for design, operation, dismantlement of crude storage installations, excluding LPG

Last updated: 10 February 2022

Specifications for safe industrial operations and environmental protection for the design, construction, operation and dismantling of onshore oil storage facilities. Includes criteria for Vapor Recovery Units (VRU) and Systems (VRS) based on the storage tank type (Appendix A), as well as provisions for how to set up, operate, and maintain them. The rule also specifies VRU efficiency and the maximum concentration of gas emitted. Gas detection systems must be installed at storage tank facilities (8.3.16). Operational failures in the VRS must be documented. This rule could indirectly regulate methane and other hydrocarbon emissions from oil infrastructure.
