Non-OECD Asia’s total energy supply (TES) kept growing strongly: + 4% in 2019, such that the region accounted for 37% of global TES. The main energy-consuming sector in non-OECD Asia was industry, representing 52% of the region’s total final consumption. The region’s industry consumed mainly coal, accounting for 38% of the final industry consumption. Together, the iron, steel and non-metallic minerals sectors represented 38% of the total industry consumption. These sectors are highly reliant on coal, which met 74% of total demand in 2019. Though coal TES grew less strongly (3%) than nuclear (18%) and renewables (wind, solar, geothermal) (10%), it still represented more than half (51%) of the region’s TES in 2019.
