National Electricity Conservation Programme (Buildings)
The Procel Buildings programme focuses on improving the energy efficiency of electricity consumption in buildings. Buildings account for approximately 50% of total electricity consumption in the country, and represent an area of significant energy savings potential. The programme seeks to encourage the conservation and efficient use of natural resources (water, light, ventilation, etc.) in buildings, reducing waste and environmental impact, as well as energy efficient technologies and practices. Its activities include: training of professionals, promotion of new technologies, dissemination of good practices, regulation and energy efficiency criteria for buildings, and labelling of new and existing buildings. Procel has developed a label, the Procel Buildings Label (Selo Procel Edificações), for buildings that meet certain energy efficiency thresholds. The Procel Buildings Label is voluntary. It is compatible with the PBE Buildings Label, which is part of Brazil’s broader energy labelling programme. In order to qualify for a Procel Buildings Label, a building must meet the most efficient – A class – PBE Buildings label for the building envelope, lighting system and air conditioning system.
