Act on resource circulation of electrical and electronic equipment and vehicles (EEEV Act)

Last updated: 23 October 2024

On 27 April 2019, the South Korean Ministry of Environment issued the Enforcement Ordinance on the Recycling of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Vehicles Act ("the EEEV act") as Presidential Decree No. 31874. The EEEV Act acknowledges Korea's current dependency on imported critical raw materials and insists on the importance of recycling critical raw materials. The EEEV act aims to promote the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment and vehicles in order to recover precious and rare metals, and create economic opportunities for recycling technology.

The EEEV act extends the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to the waste electrical and electronic equipment and vehicle products, to better manage the recycling and disposal of related materials. On July 6, 2021, an amendment to the EEEV act was published, including the delegation of the operation of waste resources collection centres, which are facilities for collecting, storing, and recycling used electric vehicle (EV) batteries, to the Korea Environment Corporation (KECO).
