Support scheme to rail transport operators

Germany announced a support scheme of EUR 1.1 billion to support freight and passenger railway operators using electric traction. The scheme was introduced in the context of soaring energy prices to alleviate the increasing costs of electricity experienced by railway operators, while also aiming to reduce carbon emissions of the transport sector by promoting the electrification. The support scheme will be delivered in the form of a monthly reduction in electricity bills for rail transport operators and it will be cover electricity consumption in the year 2023.
