US Generalised Scheme of Preferences

The US Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) provides for non-reciprocal, duty-free treatment to developing countries 1974 from 1976 to 2020. Its renewal is currently being discussed.

The original GSP covered industrial products across HS sectors 25 through 96 including : 

• Aluminium (o/than alloy), unwrought;
• Lithium primary cells and primary batteries;
• Primary cells and primary batteries;
• Parts of primary cells and primary batteries;
• Other electrical machines and apparatus for electroplating, electrolysis, or electrophoresis;
• Refrigerators, household absorption-type, electrical;

For a product to qualify for GSP preferential tariff treatment, it need to originate from a beneficiary developing country (BDC). Additionally, the combined cost or value of materials from the BDC and the direct processing costs needed to represent at least 35% of the product's appraised value.
