Centres for Environmentally-friendly Energy Research (FME)
Established in 2009, the Centres for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) are time-limited research centres that are designed to generate solutions to climate- and energy-related challenges, and to promote innovation and industrial development. The FME scheme was established to implement the national R&D Energi21 strategy published in 2008. There are today 13 centres of which 8 are technology-focused on areas like CCUS, renewable energy and smart grids while 5 are social-science related and investigate the strategic and societal challenges of the energy transition. Research activities are carried out in close collaboration between research groups, trade and industry, and the public administration, and key tasks include international cooperation and researcher training. Once granted FME status, the consortia will receive funding for up to eight years.
