A climate is assumed to be “hot” when the sum total of the difference between the daily mean outdoor temperature and the base temperature of 10°C (cooling degree days with base temperature of 10°C) adds up to at least 5 000 over the course of one year. Need for space cooling does not necessary correspond to the need of installing space cooling equipment, but rather to consider cooling-oriented design options during the construction phase of the building.
