CO2 Transport and Storage Infrastructure workshop
Background
Over 30 participants gathered in Paris for the IEA CO2 transport and storage infrastructure workshop (Photograph: IEA)
The International Energy Agency (IEA) successfully ran a key workshop focused on CO2 transport and storage in Paris on 16-17 May 2017. The aim of the event was to discuss the challenges and solutions for CO2 transport and storage (T&S) infrastructure development.
This two-day workshop (by invitation only) brought together public policy makers, researchers, industry experts and IEA representatives with more than 30 participants from twelve different countries discussing the importance to accelerate CCS deployment through coordinated and strategic development of multi-user CO2 transport and storage (CTS) infrastructure across key regions of the world.
The packed agenda included more than 30 high quality presentations across various technical and non-technical aspects on how to build the required CTS infrastructure providing a wealth of, information, best practice and lessons learned to all participants.
The IEA CTS infrastructure workshop also allowed, under Chatham House rules, a free exchange of views especially on the need, challenges and ways to progress urgently the assessment of large-scale storage resources necessary to build multi-user CO2 CTS infrastructure. It was recognized that CTS infrastructure for the sole purpose of removing and disposing of CO2 emissions is an entirely new business proposition in most regions and that new approaches are required with strong government-industry collaboration. The workshop also identified the need to demonstrate the CCS value proposition with consideration for the societal benefits of CCS deployment across multiple sectors of the economy, which cannot take place without strong political and public support as well as clear CCS narrative and messages.
The IEA CO2 transport and storage infrastructure workshop will inform the IEA’s upcoming work on these key aspects of the CO2 T&S infrastructure including future publications and targeted workshops on this important topic.
The IEA would like to thank all participants, speakers and contributors to this very successful workshop.
