(Australian Capital Territory) Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act 2010

Last updated: 15 February 2022

Establishes a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) to achieve zero net emissions by 30 June 2045. Greenhouse gas emissions are defined to include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, HFCs, and others.  The law also sets an interim target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 40% less than 1990 emissions by 30 June 2020, and sets a goal of using 100% renewable electricity by 2020.  The law authorises the government to determine a method for measuring greenhouse gas emissions for purposes of the targets and requires an annual report form an independent entity on emissions and progress against the targets.
